The topic: The most interesting places of the world. Water bodies

Цілі уроку:

формувати освітньо-пізнавальну, комунікативну, інформаційну компетентності учнів; розширити лексичний запас ліцеїстів з теми; закріпити на практиці навички вживання найвищого ступеня порівняння прикметників; реалізувати міжпредметні зв’язки;

активізувати пізнавальну діяльність учнів за допомогою групових форм роботи та ТЗН, створювати можливості для розвитку критичного мислення;

сприяти формуванню позитивного та бережливого ставлення до природи, виховувати почуття взаємоповаги, відповідальності та товариськості.


I Greetings: (3 min)


T: Good morning dear students, I am glad to see you. Welcome, please, our guests. Sit down, please. Today we have a special lesson. Special, because there are some important guests here and also because the topic of the lesson is not only interesting but also amazing for us. It is WATER. We are going to speak about water, read about water, sing and move with the song about water, listen and watch interesting videos and, of course, as we usually do at our English lesson we are going to have a lot of fun. Now please find the words-activities which begin with the letter of the word water.

Well, let’s begin.

The main question of today’s lesson: what are the most exciting and the greatest water bodies on the planet Earth?

To find out this we need to know what is water?

II Warming up

  1. Mind map: water.

Students go to the blackboard and write all the words they think are suitable

Sea, ocean, river, waterfall, lake, …


2. Phonics: Students pronounce and label the object on the map (three to one) three times together after me, then once only one of you who receives the label of any color. And that person should go the blackboard and label the place we pronounced


Oceans: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean

Seas: Mediterranean, The Sea of Azov, Aegean, Siberian, Weddell

Rivers: Nile, Dnipro, Amazon, Yangtze, Huang He

Countries: Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Asia


3. Checking up the home task: dialogues about travelling

T: Such a great places are on our planet. I‘d like to know where have you been? Have you ever visited some of these great places? Have you ever seen them? I know that some of you prepared dialogues about this. Am I right? Please, come and act.

T: What subject is very close to our today’s topic?

S: Geography

T: Absolutely right. I would like you to imagine that you are scientists - people who look for information about different things. What do you think what information we are going to find?

S: We will look for information about seas, oceans, rivers. What animals live there, the depth and length of river or so.

T: You are right. And to make it all successful and good, please, join you group. Each of you has a part of a name of you group, please stand up and find your partners.

Choose a piece of paper on the black board. All of these are the parts of two words. Guess what the words are and join your group.

The Dnipro River

The Dnipro River is one of the major rivers in Europe (fourth by length) that flows from Russia, through Belarus and Ukraine, to the Black Sea. Its total length is 2,285 kilometres (1,420 mi), of which 485 km (301 mi) lie within Russia, 595 km (370 mi) within Belarus, and 1,095 km (680 mi) within Ukraine. Its area covers 504,000 square kilometres (195,000 sq mi), of which 289,000 km2 (112,000 sq mi) are within Ukraine. In old times it was known as Borisfen.

The Dnipro 's source is in central Russia. It is the border between Belarus and Ukraine. It is connected with the Western Bug by the Dnieper-Bug Canal. Its estuary, or liman, used to be defended by the strong fortress of Ochakiv.

Cities and towns located on the Dnipro are listed in order from the river's source (in Russia) to its mouth (in Ukraine): Smolensk, Russia, Kiev, Ukraine, Kaniv, Ukraine, Cherkasy, Ukraine, Kremenchuk, Ukraine

The Dnipro is important for the transport and economy of Ukraine

The Black Sea

The Black Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and various straits. These waters separate Eastern Europe and western Asia. The Black Sea also connects to the Sea of Azov by the Strait of Kerch.

There are a lot of animals live in it there are horsefish, jellyfish, crab, goat fish, dogfish, dolphins. The Black Sea is a friendly sea, for there are very few dangerous marine animals- even for children.

The Black Sea has an area of 436,400 km2, a maximum depth is 2,206 m (7,238 ft). The Black Sea lies between Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Important cities along the coast include Batumi, Burgas, Constanţa, Istanbul, Kerch, Kherson, Novorossiysk, Odessa, Samsun, Sevastopol, Sochi, Sukhumi, Varna, Yalta and others.

The Black Sea also receives river water from European rivers: the Don, Dnieper and Danube.


7. Listening

T: You know, yesterday when I worked on my computer a virus came and killed some important program so I had a mess in my document. I was going to read you texts about two the biggest accidents happened on Earth. But now I do not understand anything. The sentences were mixed up and I cannot understand what sentence from what text. I will read it and if you think that this sentence is yours due to the name of your group, please, raise up your hands, ok? I will give you the sentences and you will have to put them in a right order. And then present us your story. Letters on the stripes of paper can help you to put your story on order: they form two good words.

1. P. In 1909 some rich men have decided to build three big ships to sail them over the Atlantic Ocean.

E. One of them was black and white Titanic.

R. It was 268 meters long and weighed over 46,000 tons. It took 3 years to completely construct and outfit the Titanic.

E. So, in April 1912 2,228 people came up on the board of the ship.

C. The most families of the passengers were American.

T. On the night of April 14, 1912 when the ship were sailing in the waters of Atlantic it struck a massive iceberg.

W. It took 3 hours for the entire ship to sink.

O. The Titanic became completely submerged about 2:45 AM on the morning of April 15, 1912.

R. The main factor why the ship became underwater was a massive iceberg in Atlantic Ocean.

K. Only 705 people were lucky to stay alive.

! All others were dead.


2. E. God saw that the earth became worse place and have decided to destroy all life by big rain.

X. But Noah was a good man, and God gives him instructions for the construction of an Ark (boat) made of wood.

C. God said to Noah to bring two of every sort of animal and everything on the dry land and their food.

E. Then God said to Noah to take his family, birds and animals with him.

L. After that He closed up the door of the Ark.

L. The flood (big rain) began, and the waters rose higher and higher up all the high mountains and covered the earth, so all the people and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens died.

E. Seventh month the Ark was on the mountains of Ararat, and in the tenth month the rain stopped .

T. When they saw the sun and the tops of the mountains Noah sent out a raven and a dove (two birds) to see if the waters disappeared.

W. He waited seven days more and sent out the dove again, and this time the bird didn’t come back.

O. God told Noah to leave the Ark.

R. All people and animals were alive. Nobody in the Ark died.

K. They began to live a new life on Earth.


8. Relaxation.

Students should sand up when they hear the sound [b] at the beginning of the word, they should sit down when they hear it again.


9. Watching the part of BBC video “Shallow sea” about coral reefs

Students answer questions, they make in their groups.
