PROCEDURE

1. Greeting

T: Nice to meet you

I’m so glad to meet you!

S: Thank you, we are glad to meet you!

2. Warming up

An activity “Two circles” Students greet each other and then tell the group about feelings and emotions of their partners.

3. Brainstorming

Students get cards with words on the topic, give the definition of them and stick the card on the board.

T: So what is the topic of our lesson today? Guess what we are going to do today!

S 1: to speak about social networking;

S 2: to think of the advantages and disadvantages of networking;

S 3: the TV is on so we are going to watch something;

S 4: as usual we will play some games;

S 5: I am sure you would like us to read some texts;

S 6: I hope I will get some new information.

T: Be sure you all will meet your expectations during the lesson.

Firstly, I have got a question for you. Who likes talking more than texting? Who likes texting and reading more? Look at our board! What social net is designed for people who like talking? Skype. What is Skype? What social net is designed for people who like texting? What is Twitter?

4. Check on homework

One group of students (Twitter lovers) does the task in a written form. They get the sentence if the task is done well. Skype lovers play the game Alias to check the words they have learned.

5. Main part

5.1 Listening

Students watch the soundless video for 17 seconds. (Pause)

T: What is this video about? Who is this man? Any ideas?

T: So we are going to watch a film about Mark Zuckerberg and his brainchild Facebook and find out some details. Don’t be afraid to find this video difficult to understand. Look through the questions at the screen. Your task is to find out just some facts, but not understand everything.

(Video)

  • Describe Mark’s personality

  • What happened in 2004, 2007, 2008?

  • Who wanted to buy Facebook? Did someone buy it?

Students answer the questions and look through the right answers on the screen.

  • He is not a socially gifted person. But actually he is a guy who reconnects people. He is the world’s youngest self-made millionaire

  • 2004 – Mark started a project called Facebook

2007 – Mark turned down the media giant Viacom bet to buy Facebook

2008 – Facebook was used by 200 million people

  • Everybody wanted to buy Facebook. For example, the media giants Viacom and Yahoo wanted to buy it. Microsoft bought a tiny part of Facebook.

5.2 Reading

T: We know why Mark is very rich, but we will know how this started by reading the text.

However, it is a bit complicated task. The sentences are scrambled by some hacker. Put the sentences in the right order.

In 2004, a 23-year-old Mark Zuckerbe, launched Facebook while he was studying at Harvard University.

People wanted a university website with students’ profiles, so Mark decided to do something about it. 1,200 students signed up within 24 hours!

He then expanded the site to include other universities. Mark faced some difficulties, though.

Three Harvard seniors insisted that while Zuckerberg was working on a similar project with them, he was using their ideas to create Facebook.

This didn’t stop Mark, though, and Facebook soon became the biggest social networking site in the world with 500 million users to date.

Students read the sentences in order.

5.3 Speaking

Past-reading task 1.

T: The task for boys is to imagine themselves being Mark and tell about his life from 1st person.

(Girls vote for an avatar they like. The name of the boy is written on the other side of the paper)

Past-reading task 2.

T: A game “Fizz-boing-bounce.” Students talk about Mark for 1 minute.

5.4 Relaxation

A game “Bam-snap-clap”

5.5 Group work

Students join the groups using puzzles. ( The Pros, Cons and Emotions)

T: We need a person who will watch time.

T: Each group has got some ideas for your posters but not all the ideas can be used in your group. So, you should choose only those stripes which are appropriate for you. For this task you have 1 minute. Did you get it? ** What is your task? ** Will you use all these ideas for your poster?

-No.

How much time do you have?

-1 minute.

Ok let’s start.

T: Have you all chosen your best variants?

Perfect, then, please, could you look at the ideas that are left and guess which group should have them? Give all the stripes to that group.

What do you have?

Now check if you have chosen the right ideas?

Fine! Now make up one more idea according to your group and write it down. Would you like to summarize you ideas, make a quick poster and present your conclusions according to the ideas from your group. You have 2 more minutes. Put your poster on the board and make a conclusion on behalf of your group.

5.6 Listening

T: I asked our journalists to interview some of our students. Let’s watch the interview and learn about their attitude to social nets.

6. Summary

7. Home assignment

T: Choose a different group and think about Vkontakte from the other point of view. Write 60-80 words expressing your ideas.

If you are interested in Mark’s life, you can watch a film “Social networks” in You Tube where you can find automatic subtitles.

8. Evaluating/Marks

Students get the card with the name of the classmate and comment on his or her progress. The teacher shows the agreement/disagreement and gives marks.
